Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson) was an American model, actress and singer. Famous for playing comic blonde bombshell, she was a top billed actress of the 50’s.
Monroe was one of the most marketable stars by 1953, her significant performances include ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ (1953), ‘How to Marry a Millionaire ‘(1953), ‘The Seven Year Itch’ (1955). She received critical acclaim for the movie ‘Bus Stop’ (1956) and also for the movie ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’ (1957) which she independently produced. She won a Golden Globe award for her work in the ‘1959’ hit film ‘Some Like it Hot’. Her last movie was the drama ‘The Misfits’ which released in 1961.
Her troubled life ran the rumour mills in those days. She was in the ranks of glamorous, scandalous women who ran wild and free in a time when women were timid and shy and waited for men to open doors for them. Enter Marilyn and she charmed everyone with her pretty, little, naive girl tricks while her real persona remain hidden from the camera. She struggled with substance abuse, depression and anxiety and tried to end her life several times. On August 5, 1962, she died at age 36 from barbiturate overdose at her home in LA. Her death was ruled as suicide but several conspiracy theories have been proposed since her death.
The iconic, sensational diva of the 50’s who is still revered as a sex symbol and a style icon was an inspiration for many. The way she carried herself and her persona encouraged women to love their bodies and enjoy their femininity.
As she said, “I don’t mind living in a man’s world as long as I can be a woman in it.”
Here are 5 reasons why she is still the hottest celebrity Hollywood has ever had. After all, ‘Well behaved women rarely make history!’
5. Her unwavering self-confidence
Anyone who has seen her, cannot deny her love for herself. She loved her body not in a narcissistic manner, but just pure acceptance. She embodied an aura of confidence and moved like a woman with a purpose. She had a lovely figure and she was grateful for it. Her self-care routines were nothing short of meticulous but they weren’t extravagant either.
4. Her love for learning
Her screen life might have potrayed her like a dumb blonde but her real life has other stories to tell. She did not have a formal education and she was self-concious about it, but she kept upwith the world issues and stayed updated. Few people know that she had a personal library of over 400 books. She didn’t go to a school but she learned from life and these were some of the hardest lessons she had to learn.
3. Not a damsel-in-distress
Like other famous celebrities, Marilyn did not adore the paparazzi nor did she like their extreme indulgence and speculations about her personal life. She had an illustrious career but her private life wasn’t a fairy tale to be precise. She had her bad days but she never let those things ever affect her career. She was a girl who valued her achievements and would not let other things get in the way. So, she always smiled for the cameras. She never showed her weaknesses nor did she try to gain sympathy. Her pride was her most precious virtue.
2. Her positivity
Inspite of facing rough seas in her personal life, she was a bright and optimistic person who believed in ‘kissing a lot’ and ‘miracles’. “Sometimes things fall apart so that better things can fall together.” Her smile was infectious and she brightened up every room she stepped in.
1. Her encouraging words to women all around the world.
“Girls compete with each other, real women empower each other.” That is exactly what she believed in and that is what she practiced. Her motivating words to women to love themselves and acknowledge their own worth, sets this diva a class apart from the others. She was an example for women all around the world to rise up and stop underestimating their worth.
