Behind all the chaos and confusion regarding the consumption of Maggi and bread, we were forced to question our own eating habits. We still crave for yummy Maggi noodles and you almost start salivating the moment the room is filled with the aroma of Maggi noodles..Sigh. Sad I can’t do that anymore. It all started when an officer of the UP Food Safety and Drug Administration based in Barabanki ordered tests on a dozen samples of Nestle’s Maggi instant noodles at the state laboratory in Gorakhpur.
The Gorakhpur lab tested for monosodium glutamate (MSG) to check Nestle’s claim that Maggi had none. MSG stimulates the nervous system and makes food appear tastier. It is widely used in “Indian Chinese” food. In “extreme cases”, MSG may cause some reactions in the body; “however, researchers have found no definitive evidence of a link between MSG and these symptoms,” according to a Mayo Clinic note on allergies.
After scaring us to death, they decide to make a comeback to the market again. But what’s wrong with the bread now? They say bread has cancer causing agents. (You gotto be kidding me! Is there anything on earth that is edible?) Well, I know there are many frustrated souls out there like me who would not bother about such bans, but I am afraid it has to be taken seriously because as the old saying goes ‘Health is Wealth’ and we need to know everything about the food we eat.
I decided to list out some other food items that never came to highlight even though we have known for long about the side effects of these delicious and crunchy food items. Hope it helps you in understanding the harm it causes to our body and while I know it is difficult to avoid all this but we should certainly try to reduce the consumption levels to a certain limit.
Lays and Kurkure(Potato Chips)
While Saif Ali khan and Ranbir Kapoor are busy advertising to us potatoes that are crispy and hot off the oven, what we need is a reality check to help us understand the chemicals used in such junk food. While we cannot expect Parineeti Chopra to tell us that Kurkure is not good for health, it is high time we realize what we consume. Potato chips are never made from fresh potatoes, they have high level of sodium that is enough to give you a heart disease and let’s not forget the amount of trans fat such packed food have. Moreover, Kurkure contains high level of chemicals and plastic substance in it. Alright! This sounds way too dangerous than maggi.
If you think a bowl of cereals are the perfect way to start your day then you might be wrong. To turn the grains into their familiar flake, loop or shredded shape, a food extrusion process is used. The high temperature and pressure involved basically strips away the grains’ nutrients. Also added to this is huge amount of sugar and salt added to cereals. Most packaged muesli contains soy lecithin, a by-product of the soybean oil production. While you may be thinking that Ragi, Oats and other grain cereals are healthy, look again and reduce your cereal consumption right away.
Red also means danger

Red 40 is a certified color that comes from petroleum distillates or coal tars. It may accelerate the appearance of immune system tumors in mice. It also causes hypersensitivity (allergy-like) reactions in some consumers and might trigger hyperactivity in children.
Pickles and Vinegar
We happily buy pickles and vinegars sold in cheap plastic covers and bottles not realizing the side effects of it. Fermenting is usually longer term and very acidic, it is very unhealthy to store such things in plastic containers. Even if u buy it, please make sure to immediately transfer it to glass or pickle jars.
We are the only living species who consume species milk. While many may disagree with me but after a certain age, milk should be avoided. According to the nutritionist and author Patrick Holford, we lose the ability to digest lactose, a major component of milk, as we age. Disrupted digestion causes bloating, food intolerances, makes our bodies more acidic and provokes an inflammatory response. There are many more alternatives to it like soy, almond, coconut and cashew milk.
Apart from making you fat, processed food are very bad for health. Processed food is foods that have been chemically processed and made solely from refined ingredients and artificial substances. There are no nutrients or food value in such products. Processed foods are often high in unhealthy fats. Several studies show that when people eat more of these oils, they have a significantly increased risk of heart disease.
Protein is a key part of a healthy diet – but the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a daily intake of 50g of protein for adults. With an increasing demand for the chicken meat, there are an increasing number of injected chickens consumed by many. These injected chickens can later cause hormonal problems in our body. While we may not be able to differentiate between non-injected and injected ones, we need to keep in mind that chicken should not be consumed on a daily basis.
