Travelling Through Gastronomic Experiences

Food is really important to us and we all can’t imagine a world without food. Me and Kezia being a big time foodaholics decided to have a separate column dedicated to some amazing flavors and spices around the world. I wanted to start this column by posting about some amazing foods that we should definitely try before dying. For me food is not just something that we eat but food represents our culture , identity and society. Every culture has their own way of preparing and eating a meal and this is the reason why the traditional method of cooking is given so much importance these days.However we seem to be losing on some of the indigenous ingredients due to the coming of the fast food storm.

To understand food there can be a better way than travelling through various food cultures and knowing about some of the most delicious, mouthwatering, flavorsome and scrumptious dishes made in food festivals around the world, which is why i decided sum up a list of some of the delicacies offered in these food festivals so that you don’t miss any of them.

Galway Oyster Festival

The Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival is an annual four day event held each year on the last weekend of September in the centre of Galway City. A highlight in the west of Ireland’s festival calendar, it is the world’s longest running Oyster Festival and one of the most internationally recognised Irish events. Not many of us are oyster fans but this festival has a lot more to offer.

Mooncake festival, China

If you are in Hong Kong during the Mid-Autumn Festival, it will be impossible not to notice Mooncakes. They are believed to have originated from Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) revolutionaries, who are said to have used the pastries to pass secret messages between each other. Neighborhoods arrange a host of magical lantern exhibitions and carnivals in homage to the Mid-Autumn Festival.



Pizza fest, Italy

“Ma tu vuliv a’ pizz” are the lyrics of a famous Neapolitan song directed to a woman who only wanted to eat pizza.The city of Naples celebrates its most famous food – PIZZA. Visitors and locals will have the chance to taste pizzas of various types and shapes. In addition, you can watch pizza makers showing off their dough-throwing skills with live music, dance and various other spectacles all here to enliven the festivities.

Melbourne food and wine festival

Melbourne Food and Wine Festival has a diverse program of unforgettable events that fill Melbourne’s network of lane ways, restaurants, bars, cozy basements and rooftops, and spills into regional Victoria. The 17-day festival attracts some 250,000 visitors each year.The Festival set a record in 2014 with a 530m-long table – the longest in the Festival’s 22-year history – set along the banks of the Yarra River. With many mouth-watering regional events in the festival program, city slickers are encouraged to take a food and wine mini-breaks in the countryside.

Salon du chocolate festival, France

If not any other festival i am definitely attending this one and who doesn’t love chocolates.The Salon du Chocolat is an international chocolate festival in Paris. World renowned Chocolatiers and pastry chefs from over 15 countries enchant with their exquisite creations, and guess what? they even have a chocolate fashion show! That’s what i call true love.( In my case it is chocolate)


Oktober Fest , Germany

This is all about beer, beer and only beer. Oktober Fest is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it is a 16-day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first weekend in October, with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year.Large quantities of beer are consumed, with 7.7 million litres served during the 16 day festival in 2013.Visitors may also enjoy a mixture of attractions, such as amusement rides, side-stalls and games, as well as a wide variety of traditional food.

Isle of wight garlic festival, England

The show is food and entertainment at its very best. A vast array of eats, treats, sights and sounds to suit all tastes and ages. There are huge garlic and food marquees, cooking demonstrations from top Island chefs in the all new theatre kitchen, children’s entertainers, archery and a giant fun-fair.They have everything made out of garlic, right from garlic beer to garlic ice cream.

Festival gourmet international. Mexico

When we talk about Mexico, we are talking about an explosion of flavours and spices.Begun in 1995, the Festival Gourmet International kicks off the winter season each November by matching up top chefs from around the globe with local restaurants in a program that includes theme nights, a grand dinner, a jazz-and-wine evening, workshops and a “Grand Gourmet Village,” a party night with an orchestra and fireworks.

Moritz gourmet festival

Saint Moritz Gourmet Festival is one of the most important gastronomic festivals in Switzerland and over the years.For five days, the Upper Engadin transforms itself into a paradise for foodies.Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy special programmed activities: such as the Gourmet Dinners, which gives the fantastic opportunity to savor the individual cooking arts of each of the eight star-crowned guest master chefs; or the Gourmet Safaris which is obviously coupled with other entertainment programmes.


International Mango Festival, India

India is famous for the quality of Mangoes it produces and this festival is a great opportunity for them to showcase over 100 varieties of mangoes.( Yumm that sounds mangolicious!)The International Mango Festival is held every year at the Delhi Haat Pitampura in Delhi.this festival aims to showcase the specialties of mangoes from different states of India.It features an array of recreational events and activities associated with mango, like mango eating competitions, quizzes, mango slogan writing, mango carving, children’s shows, mango folk performances, mango tasting, and plenty of mangoes to go around with varieties of the fruit on display.


Taste of Chicago

The Taste of Chicago hits Grant Park, just like other annual beloved summer music festivals, leaving a trail of disposable forks and cheesecake skewers from some of the best Chicago restaurants.Each summer, a variety of local restaurants and food vendors set up booths in Grant Park for a free festival, offering up sample of their most popular dishes. The festival has it’s own currency—you purchase tickets at the gate which can be spent on food and drinks. The Taste of Chicago also books a robust lineup of concerts, including a mix of national and regional touring acts

National Cherry Festival, Michigan

Like the saying goes like a ‘cherry on the cake’, cherry is an all time favorite and a widely used fruit for desserts.The Original National Cherry Festival began in 1925 as the Blessing of the Blossoms Festival. This Festival was originally an event held in early May to attract tourists to Northern Michigan to view the booming cherry blossoms.Every year more than 500,000 attendees enjoy the National Cherry Festival. Families can enjoy many kinds of activities from cherry pit spitting and pie eating contests, to the Grand Royale Parade in which the newly crowned Cherry Queen greets the crowds. There is also a Junior Royale parade for children and a Festival Airshow, including periodic visits from the Blue Angels.


Vermont Cheesemakers Festival, Vermont

Cheese is an ingredient that can turn any dish into a smacking one.Vermont is the premium artisanal cheese state with the highest number of cheese makers per capita: over 40 of them! They invite you to experience our passion for making fine cheeses, taste local and fresh foods and wines, and meet the artisans who make them. You can spend the entire day along the shores of Lake Champlain at the historic Shelburne Farms Coach Barn sampling, buying, learning about the art of making cheese.


Salmon festival, Alaska

 Every year over 6,000 people turn the Kenai Peninsula village of Ninilchik into a city as families and friends fill the region  full of music, food, fish and love.  Over the three day weekend many of Alaska’s top food, crafts, art and brews are available throughout the grounds and a family friendly atmosphere, including a daily children’s program is part of the four stage extravaganza that includes over 50 acts.Others camp out near the fairgrounds for a whole weekend of music and beer that forms an important part of the festival.

Food Truck festival, Washington D.C

DC has a number of food truck festivals throughout any given year, though most events are held during the warm months of the year. Ruckeroo is a monthly showcase of Washington, D.C.’s local food trucks, bringing everyone’s flavor-ites together one Friday each month from April to September. A diverse sampling of foods and flavors are presented at this festival, and there’s live music and games throughout the day.
