Traditionally Glamourous

Any new fashion trend is like a breath of fresh air as fashion and style is what defines our personality. Fashion is not about following the latest trend but it can imply many things altogether. A piece of cloth that we body adorn our body with not only defines your personality but can reflect our culture, values and beliefs which is why me and Kezia decided to dedicate a separate section for Entertainment and Fashion as there can be no better way to know about a particular culture or a society. I wanted to start the fashion column by talking about some the traditional attires of India carried out by Bollywood actresses onscreen.

Bollywood has given us some serious fashion trends and our bolly beauties and hunks have done that in western as well as traditional attire. As much as I want to talk about Bollywood hunks I would like to begin with the ladies. Even if Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra or Sonam Kappor have walked the red carpet at Cannes with glittering gowns sweeping through the floor, these very same ladies have managed to sizzle onscreen in a traditional get up. Without wasting much time let me list out some amazing traditional outfits that our Bollywood divas carried off with ease.

In the year 1994, she won the Miss World title and went on to become one of the top actresses of Bollywood but her character of Maharani Jodha Bai in the epic historical film Jodha Akbar is one of the most remembered character. Two hundred craftsmen worked for 600 days, molded 400 kg of gold and precious and semi-precious stones to recreate jewelries of Mughal era in Ashutosh Gowariker’s historical romance “Jodhaa Akbar”. Woah! Now that is quite a lot of gold and these pictures tell us all and only Aishwarya could carry it off with such grace and elegance.

The wedding set, which Aishwarya wears in the film, is very heavy. It weighs around three-and-a-half kg. It was difficult for her to wear them. In fact, in the interviews she said the hardest part was to wear the jewelry. During the entire movie she wore close to 200 kilos of gold. I cannot start to imagine how heavy the entire dress and the jewelry would be. Hands off to her for giving such a wonderful performance onscreen despite carrying the heavy weight of the jewelry literally.

Madhuri Dixit is still known as the Dhak Dhak queen who stole millions of hearts with her amazing dance moves. Her beautiful expressions and her gracefulness only adds to her charming smile. Madhuri has danced to many songs with heavy costumes. Each of Madhuri Dixit’s attires in Devdas cost roughly Rs.15 Lakhs. There were rumors that the jewelery was so heavy that Aishwarya Rai(her costar in the film) found it difficult to dance to ‘Dola re Dola’ whereas  Madhuri could do it with ease. Wow! Way to go atta girl!

Deepika is not just a Bollywood face anymore as she is currently shooting  for her first ever Hollywood film, “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. Well she is one hell of actress who has given us amazing characters and played every role with such passion. Her dedication and passion can be seen in Bhansali films where she manages to pull off such amazing dance steps in such heavy costumes yet her beauty remains unmatched. In the striking first poster of Ramleela which looks quite fashionable is sporting an elaborate 30 kgs ghagra designed by Anju Modi.

Sporting that Marathi look for the first time, the quantico star set the screen on fire. Priyanka chopra has appeared in traditional dresses many but this time she killed us with those Marathi looks and that nosepin looked amazing on her. For me personally I fell in love with her when I saw her dressed in ethnic Navvari saree in Bajirao Mastani’s song ‘Pinga’. She was seen wearing  almost 85 Navvaris which is the other name for Maharashtrian sarees.

She would continue to surprise us with more challenging roles and this particular role of Mastani in the movie says it all.  Throughout the film She was seen wearing luscious Anagrakhas, Anarkalis, Shararas and Ornate Kurtis. It is believed that for the action scenes Deepika wore a 20 Kg Armour.( that’s what I call heavy lifting) The beautiful jewellery including  one with uncut natural diamonds, 24K gold nose ring with pearls stole all the attention. Deepika is seen wearing a ‘dhani’ (soft green) colored embroidered Anarkali-style outfit which can be seen in the above picture with a Persian inspired hat which is so soothing to the eye and so is her graceful moves to the tune of the song.

You talk about fashionista in B- town and the first name that pops out is Sonam Kapoor. Sonam Kapoor can carry off anything and everything and she proves it in this movie wears she shines gracefully and can be seen wearing bright, colorful ghagras with equally trendy yet traditional cholis with fully complementing jewelry. The cream color lehenga is a simple one with a maroon cut work border but thumbs up for the heavy kundan jewelry. If not for anything else this movie can be watched for the beautiful traditional costumes.

At first we all had our doubts as to whether Alia could carry the South Indian look but kudos to her for doing justice to the role. She looked like a doll in her wedding dress with jasmine flowers on her head and perfectly designed jewellery. I love the fact that that the saree is kept simple yet elegant with a mix of vibrant colors which perfectly catches the south Indian ethnicity. Apart from sarees she is also seen in other ethnic dresses which certainly will catch your attention.

She is the fitness queen of B-town who has given us some wonderful movies and one such movie is Dhadkan. In the film Dhadkan, Shilpa looked shining blue in a blue bridal lehenga that had heavy golden work on it. The color of the lehenga perfectly blends and complements her body. Who would have thought of bridal attire in blue, right?

She is one of the most talented actresses in Bollywood who has recently landed up in many controversies. She is one of the bold and outspoken actresses in B- town which is the exact same character been portrayed in the movie. Apart from her flawless acting in the movie, she doesn’t leave a stone in turned in getting that beautiful bridal look in a green lehenga with matching jewelry and manages to do the same for her twin role as ‘Datto’.

This ‘kuch kuch hota hai’ beauty managed to blend in the perfect bridal look in this movie. This design can be referred by many brides for getting that perfect dress for the big day as this is the classic red bridal look, which is commonly seen in Indian scenarios. As for Rani, she looked beautiful in this Bright Red lehenga.
